Stud earrings are the easiest earrings for most men to wear, and among the hardest to choose online. A couple of millimetres changes the look completely, and the metal matters more than most listings let on. This guide covers stud sizes, metals for sensitive and healing ears, stone choices, and the old question of which ear.
Quick answer: For most men, a 6–8mm stud is the standard size: visible without looking oversized. Go 3–5mm for something subtle and 9mm or larger for a statement. Choose rhodium or white gold-plated sterling silver, titanium or surgical steel for healed piercings, and leave a fresh piercing in the jewellery your piercer fitted until it has fully healed. Which ear you wear it in no longer carries any meaning.
Stud sizes in millimetres
Stud size is the diameter of the face, in millimetres. The same size looks different on different earlobes, but as a guide:
- 3–5mm: subtle. Reads as a glint rather than an earring, which suits work or a first pair.
- 6–8mm: the standard men's size. Clearly visible, still understated.
- 9mm and up: a statement. Works best as a single stud or on a larger lobe.
Before you buy, hold a ruler against your earlobe in the mirror and look at where each size would sit. It takes thirty seconds and saves most returns.
Choosing a metal
The post is the part that sits inside the piercing, so its metal is what your skin reacts to.
- Sterling silver (925) is 92.5% pure silver. Many of our men's studs are 925 silver with a rhodium or white gold plating, which adds a bright finish and slows tarnish. Our explainer on what 925 means covers the hallmark.
- Titanium and surgical steel are the usual choices for very sensitive skin and new piercings.
- Gold plating over silver gives a warm look at a fraction of the price of solid gold, but the plating wears gradually with daily use.
If cheap earrings make your ears itch or redden, nickel is the usual culprit. Our guide to men's jewellery for sensitive skin explains what to look for.
Fresh piercings: wait before you switch
A new piercing needs to heal before you swap in fashion studs. Earlobe piercings commonly take six to eight weeks or longer, and changing jewellery too early is a common cause of irritation and infection. Follow your piercer's advice, then start with lightweight studs in a metal your skin tolerates.
Onyx, cubic zirconia or plain metal
Black onyx is an opaque stone with no sparkle. It's the most understated option and a classic for men. Try the 8mm black onyx studs in white gold-plated sterling silver, or the 8mm onyx halo studs for a little more detail.
Cubic zirconia (CZ) is a lab-made stone that mimics the sparkle of a diamond for a fraction of the price. Clear CZ catches the light; black CZ gives sparkle in a darker tone. See the 8mm cubic zirconia sterling silver studs or the round black CZ studs, available from 3mm to 8mm.

Plain metal and huggies suit men who want shape rather than stone. A huggie is a small hoop that sits close to the lobe, like the Aetherion huggie in rhodium-plated sterling silver.

Which ear should a man wear an earring in?
Either, or both. The idea that a single earring in the left or right ear signalled a man's sexuality was a stereotype that circulated in the 1980s and 1990s, and it was never reliable. Today it carries no meaning. Wear a single stud on whichever side you prefer, or a pair. Some men prefer a single statement earring, like our sterling silver key and loop earring, which is sold individually for exactly that reason.
Backs, posts and fit
Most studs use a push (butterfly) back that slides onto the post. They're quick to use but can loosen over time; gently squeezing the back's coils tightens the grip. Screw backs are more secure for studs you wear every day. Standard posts suit standard lobe piercings; stretched or gauged ears need different jewellery altogether.
Care
Clean the posts now and then with an alcohol wipe and polish the faces with a soft cloth. Take studs out for swimming, especially in chlorinated pools, and store each pair together so backs don't go missing.
Frequently asked questions
What size stud earring should a man wear?
Between 6mm and 8mm suits most men. Choose 3–5mm for something subtle and 9mm or larger for a statement.
Which ear do guys wear earrings in?
Either or both. The old left-ear and right-ear associations no longer mean anything.
Is cubic zirconia a real diamond?
No. Cubic zirconia is a lab-made stone that looks similar to a diamond but is softer and far less expensive.
What earrings are best for sensitive ears?
Titanium, surgical steel and good-quality plated sterling silver are the usual choices. Avoid unmarked base metals, which often contain nickel.
Can I sleep in stud earrings?
Small studs with screw backs are generally fine to sleep in. Push backs can loosen or press into the skin, so take them out if your lobes feel sore.
